Envato pays US $140m to its community
Melbourne based company is supporting over 3 million users globally

SummarySince 2006 Envato marketplaces such as ThemeForest, VideoHive and CodeCanyon have collectively paid out US $140 million to 3.5 million users globally.
Since 2006 Envato has existed to serve its global community of freelance designers.
In late 2013 CEO and co-founder Collis Ta’eed announced on the company’s blog a total of US $140m has now been earned by the community. This is the sum of all payments made to authors on the sale of their digital goods and services since the company’s inception in 2006.
The Australian-owned Melbourne-based creative ecosystem is home to over 3.5 million users worldwide, providing opportunities to earn, learn and create online.
‘When the community succeeds, we succeed is the main Value underpinning everything we do,’ Ta’eed said. ‘We are really happy to have reached this milestone and will be doing more to grow and evolve so we can best serve our incredibly talented community.’
Envato’s review team ensures the products submitted by authors are of a high quality, meaning better products for buyers, and continued learning for authors. ‘The fact that each product is reviewed by a professional in both design and development is a dream,’ says Romania-based author Ciprian Turcu (CleanScript).
At the end of last year 589 authors in total had reached ‘Elite’ status, marked by over US $75,000 in sales. Envato offers an attractive rewards package to help those with Elite status gain recognition in the community, plus other perks such as access to tools like analytics to help them sell.
To date 15 authors have surpassed US $1 million in sales, and a further four have exceeded US $2 million. Peerapong, the author behind ThemeGoods, reached US $2 million in sales in less than three years. He credits the Envato Marketplaces with changing his life and allowing him to work on his own themes full-time from his home in Thailand. Peerapong says Envato ‘truly creates an unbelievable opportunity for people from all over the world.’
Themes, images, videos, audio and more are sold on Envato marketplaces such as ThemeForest, CodeCanyon, VideoHive and AudioJungle. Last year netguru.co listed ThemeForest as being one of the top 10 sites running on Ruby.
As of April 2013 freelancers can now also advertise their services on Microlancer.com. This virtual shopfront features hundreds of priced, packaged and ready to deliver creative services.
Providing sites to assist creatives successfully run their own freelancing services is an important goal for the Envato team. Ta’eed stresses that it is equally important to provide opportunities for people to upskill in a rapidly changing online environment. The Tuts+ network offers tutorials, courses and articles to help people learn or improve their skills on a variety of different topics. Last year the sites passed 720 hours of educational video content and 16,000 free tutorials and articles since its 2007 launch.
