Since being founded in 2006, Envato has taken pride in being a company for creatives, by creatives, with its 4 million-strong community at the core of every decision made. New figures detailing the company’s 2014 achievements have been released, showing the Melbourne-based creative ecosystem continues to go from strength to strength.

Envato has launched its 2014 Year in Review, announcing Envato’s global online community of 4 million has been paid a total of US $224 million in lifetime earnings. Last year the number of authors to make US $1 million in sales reached 30, with more community members earning their living solely through Envato sites. There are currently 6.4 million items on Envato Market with one purchase made every six seconds. In 2014, the largest of the Envato Market sites, ThemeForest, became one of the top 100 most popular websites in the world according to Alexa, ahead of Netflix and Google.com.au.

A major highlight from the Envato Market community includes author partnership ThemeFusion, who made the 100,000th sale of their WordPress theme Avada in December. Thousands of websites worldwide are built using the top-selling theme, exclusively sold on ThemeForest. “It’s truly amazing, and we are humbled that users have decided to buy our item,” says the ThemeFusion team.

The other components of Envato’s creative ecosystem have also thrived. Newest addition Envato Studio has seen 20,000 freelance jobs completed since its launch in 2013 and a total of $1.4 million earned by its community of freelancers. “Turning your passion into what you do is a big perk because you don’t even realise how much time you’re spending on things you love doing,” says Envato Studio provider Chris Zammit (Zlaws), who works from his hometown of Malta.

Envato’s long-running Tuts+ learning network now contains 18,500 free tutorials and more than 440 video courses. This model of flexible learning empowers people to change their lives with knowledge. This could be to develop new hobbies, keep abreast of changes in an industry, or even enable a new career path. “I began as a truck driver with a wife and three kids working for a small lumber company,” says Tuts+ subscriber Derrick Koon. “I began getting up at 4:30am every morning and studying online about web design. Four years later, I make five times what I did before and work at a university.”

In 2014 two Envato team members were sent around the world to capture the lives, locations and passions of various community members in the Envato Stories series. Developers, designers, managers and more from all over the world were showcased through the series.

“Envato is tens of thousands of independent creatives, loosely confederated, fiercely competitive, and wildly passionate,” says CEO Collis Ta’eed. “Envato is ultimately only as great as its people. And its people are awesome.”

2015 promises to be another big year for Envato, with better user experiences, more transparency, fresh content and increased integration between Studio, Tuts+ and Envato Market.
