The Envato Foundation will commit more than $186,000 over two years to support students from Indigenous and remote or rural communities to study at Queensland’s Bond University.

The partnership will provide two 50% scholarships of an undergraduate degree as well as granting accommodation bursaries to each student during their time studying at the university.

One of the scholarships will be made available to a graduating Yalari student and the other to a student from a remote or rural community.

The Foundation will also make a two-year contribution to Bond University’s Indigenous Support Fund, which is available to all students.

The first recipient is Abelee Stanley, who will study a Diploma of Arts before progressing to a Bachelor of Social Science. A talented rugby league player who aspires to represent Australia and mentor Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, Ms Stanley is an alumna of The Glennie School and has worked for Yalari, a not-for-profit organisation which provides scholarships for Indigenous students at some of Australia’s top high schools.

Briany Kalms, the Chair of the Envato Foundation Board, said the scholarships are an important step in helping Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth access world-class tertiary education opportunities. “We’re particularly excited about this partnership because it really closes the loop between secondary and tertiary education and it’s giving us the opportunity to continue to support a Yalari student on the next stage of their education.”

“With its small class environment and personalised student support system, Bond University is uniquely placed to nurture Indigenous students through the academic and personal challenges and opportunities of tertiary studies. The University also has an existing, strong relationship with another of our partners, Yalari; together they have helped a number of students transition to the next step, closing the loop of support across all stages of education.”

“We keenly look forward to sharing the journey of our scholarship recipients and seeing the difference they will make in not only their communities but the world.”

Vice President Engagement at Bond University, Catherine Marks, said 29 Indigenous students completed their program in 2020 alone and support from partners such as the Envato Foundation was critical to building on that record.

“The Foundation can be confident their scholars will be given every opportunity to succeed with backing from the University’s dedicated Nyombil Indigenous Support Centre.”

The Envato Foundation now supports six organisations across Australia who are actively engaged in opportunity creation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, particularly through the development and education of children and youth.

The Foundation has now contributed almost $1.2m AUD over the last three years to help create a future where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have equal opportunity in achieving success through education and employment.
